I drive this as my husbands car. Having seen it in the showroom 3 years ago this looked like an ideal family car; we liked the idea of a 4x4 but at a reasonable price and as they pre-registered it for us, it came in on budget. The interior, whilst having the luxury of heated seats in the front, is "plastic-y" and the gearstick top falls off constantly. Having tried camping last summer, as a family of four, the boot space does not allow room for a tent AND clothes! Initially, yes, we loved the car; heated seats, cabin space etc, however having lived with it now for 3 years, it's not a car I would buy again. Every service / MOT has resulted in something "major" going wrong. To say the car is only 3 years old it has had serious faults in the last 18 months - all resulting in loss of power on busy roads. Last Sunday the engine set on fire on the busy A38 in Derby. Having hauled our young children out of the smokey car and onto a busy road verge, (3 fire engines, 2 police cars and an incident unit van), and a 7 hour delay to get home, Hyundai's answer was "sorry the "regular" 10k service wasn't done on time so the warranty is null and void; over £4000 please... oh and we dont have an engine in the UK"... my husband has done 98k miles in 3 years... that's over 3 services a year! To be honest I spent £2500 less on a 1 series BMW and its far more suited to safer, more comfortable driving, luxury, economy on fuel, family space and, if Im honest, a bit more street cred! 2.0 CDX 4WD 5dr darren shields , antrim . Lovely jeep , looks huge but is smaller than my old mondeo. The boot is tiny which i found out when trying to take my families 4 suitcases in the boot to the airport. Kids love the cavernous ag seats and when folded flat you can pack quite a bit of IKEA into the rear. Its fully loaded with leather , heated seats and cruise control. Its good to drive , though it does roll a bit in corners and you are not going toget anywhere quick in it. Only used th 4wd once this winter and managed to get up a hill when ordinary cars floundered. Have to let it go due to extremely poor mpg , as many have said you get nowhere near the manufacturers stated mpg . Even driving v. carefully i still average 25mpg , even on a long motorway run with cruise on i only managed 30mpg. worked out if i sold it i would save £800 a year just on fuel a year if i bought a diesel averaging out 40mpg. I only do about 10000 miles a year. Summary - good value for the money but expect to fill it up regularly , a full tank at todays rate (£1.06)costing c. £55 only gets you 280 miles. Only buy if you do low miles and/or want to get your reward points on a regular basis 2.0 GSI 2WD 5dr Craig McWilliam , West Lothian . I had always had sports coupes but with a young family I had recently been buying MPVs. The Good- This car cost me £13500 brand new (which was a lot less than I had paid for my Scenic and my PT Cruiser) and for that you got a fair amount of equipment. The cabin doesn't feel cheap to me but it's a little behind the times against most other car manufacturers. You get a 5 year warranty (which I have never had to use touch wood) and it's just sailed through it's first MOT. It's not bad looking and fairly powerful. It's very roomy and comfortable inside. Bad- The handling is horrendous! It wheel spins in third in the wet as this is a front wheel drive. The boot is very small for this type of car although when the seats are folded down you can get a lot in there. The servicing costs are reasonable using a non franchised dealer with original parts but franchised costs are high. The fuel consumption isn't great, even out of town you would struggle to get above 30MPG and the depreciation is painful (3 yrs and 30k miles later worth around £5k from £15k list price) Overall if you have a young family and want a roomy car this would be a good buy. I would buy another one of these but would probably go for the 4WD version next time. (although now the kids can now strap themselves in I may look at the JAP Imports again!!!) 2.0 CDX CRTD 5dr Peter Jones , Devon . The gearbox failed on delivery, (brand new),within yards of the dealership. I owned this car for ten months and returned it to the dealership seven times as warning lights kept illuminating.triggered by various sensors. The dealership was absolutely brilliant and could not do enough to help and are the reason I bought yet another Hyundai, an i 30 CRDi Estate. I am gravely disappointed by the reaction I got from Hyundai Customer Services who, quite frankly, seemed no to want to know about my continuing problems,despite my being a loyal Hyundai customer now on his fifth vehicle from the company. It's taken me 39 years of driving, but at long last I've taken a car to the top of a Scottish mountain. It may not have been a Munro, and sure there was a perfectly reasonable track in place, but scrambling to the summit of 2539ft high Sgurr a' Chaorachain on the Applecross peninsula was an achievement both for me and for Hyundai's two-litre CRTD turbodiesel Tucson. The tough Korean SUV had already beaten Scotland's most spectacular road - the stunning 2000ft climb from Loch Kishorn to the top of the Bealach na Ba - when I was offered a chance to go higher still. But this final 550ft climb was no cakewalk. The Tucson had to tackle a transmitter access track hewn from solid rock and surfaced with large, loose and very sharp stones. I had to pick my way carefully along the rough surface. In places it was steep and just wide enough, but the Tucson's turbodiesel didn't miss a beat. From just over 2500ft the view over Skye to the west was magnificent. It says a lot for this modest five-door SUV that it took the Sgurr in its stride. At 4000rpm there's only 111bhp on tap and I was forced to use plenty of revs to make the summit. But with 181lb/ft of torque kicking in between 1800 and 2500rpm the climb was straightforward. The engine is a willing common-rail two-litre which revs easily and delivers as much pulling power as some competitors' 2.5-litre V6 petrol engines. The Tucson has been around for more than two years and is available in two-litre and 2.7-litre V6 petrol forms in addition to the two-litre turbodiesel. The oil burner's engine refinement is not particularly good and there's a cheap and cheerful feel about the vehicle. But as a dependable workhorse with good value pricing it is hard to beat, particularly in diesel form. The cheapest petrol version, a 140bhp two-litre GSI, costs just £14,395 on the road. But this is two-wheel drive only and a pointless choice for any off-road work. The cheapest 4x4 petrol GSI costs £15,395 but if you are looking for all-round ability you need the diesel option. Now my image of a sports vehicle is low slung, cramped, goes like mad, makes heads turn; so certainly not like this chunky beast. Best described as large 5 door hatchback, it is a budget offering from Korea. Indeed the Kia Sportage shares the same Corporate ownership, running gear, many panels and fundamental designs as this one. However the Sportage retails approx £1000 cheaper than this model so the devil is in the detail of the specifications. Also Kia don't heavily discount for Internet buyers which makes them less attractive.As you will by now have guessed, using the power of the Internet we were able to source our new Hyundai, albeit pre-registered with just 25 miles on the clock for some £4500 less than the recommended retail price of £19500. This was significantly cheaper than a comparable Kia offering from a warm glossy showroom. Yes, we lost 3 months warranty on the deal, but since Hyundai provide a full 5 years warranty in any case, this did not seem any risk.The car was pristine on collection from a dealer who had clearly registered it, then failed to make a sale. The fact that Vehicle Excise Duty was suddenly whacked up to £240 per annum for the emission band for this vehicle, and the recent fuel price hikes must indeed have contributed!Hyundai do not offer a particularly inspiring range of colours. But there is saying that a good horse cannot be a bad colour and that's exactly what our car is, a work-horse. It's a sort of nondescript fawn, which has the benefit of making it appear a little smaller, but best of all it's a super disguise for all the road dirt and grime which inevitably collects. A small snag for me is that not being over 6 foot tall, I actually cannot reach the roof to clean it without steps, so a good dirt colour is a must!There are alloy wheels all round, including the spare, which means that the tyres can be rotated to extend their lives. Also, in the horrid event of a puncture (after the breakdown services have changed the wheel, since I would not attempt to lift it!), the journey could be continued at a sensible speed and not limited to the 50 mph imposed by the modern idiom of a space saving wheel. The tyre pressures are the same all round too, and helpfully for the non technically minded a prominent reminder of the correct pressure is clearly displayed inside the drivers door post.The car is diesel powered , has a 6 speed gearbox, and is frankly more comfortable to ride in than many other cars that I have driven. Having said this, fuel economy is not a feature. Around the town you can expect to get 29 to 30mpg, but at motorway speeds, 42mpg is achievable. The reality of ownership is therefore closer to 35mpg as a rule of thumb. Interestingly, loading the car does not seem to dramatically reduce fuel consumption, which again is different to other cars that I have experienced.The cabin itself is light and airy with plenty of room for 5 decent size adults. An electric sunroof adds to the feeling of space, as does the light grey/fawn leather upholstery. I was worried this would be too light in colour to be practical but a quick wipe over soon sorts out any minor blemishes. The front seats are electrically heated too, so I am actually looking forward to a frosty day to give these a try. There are lots of cubby holes and storages places around the cabin, but one of the favourites has to be the sunglasses holder in the roof. Just right for Mr.Cool…….!The radio/CD is effective, works and has lots of speakers about the place, quite enough for me. However if you are looking for a state of the art audio system with bells and whistles, this would not satisfy. There is no mp3 connection, but I can still route my phone via Bluetooth to the speakers, so it's not all bad. The car actually boasts 3 12 volt sockets, which is very handy for all the gadgets we seem to need these days. The hatchback boot is simply cavernous, and with a lifting tailgate, much easier in restricted spaces than an opening door style. With the glass panel separately hinged too, often you can drop stuff in without actually having to lift the whole tailgate. The spare wheel is under the floor of the boot, with plenty of space to tuck the essential torch, warning triangle, bulbs and other bits which we all carry but hopefully don't actually need. Naturally, there is a retractable screen to cover any valuables left in the boot, and security is also helped by the tinted windows in the back of the car. You don't actually notice the tint whilst inside the car, but they do make it quite difficult to see anything that has been left inside. I would say this is useful these days when most of us studiously ignore the sound of car alarms, so prevention is better than cure.The only indication when driving that this is anything other than a standard large hatchback is a discreet 4wd button the dashboard. Personally, I have not actually had the courage to push this, for fear of charging off the road, so cannot comment how it actually performs. Powered steering is standard, the brakes feel positive and the car is easy to drive. However parking is another matter. The height is no problem but the long wheelbase (which give the comfort on a run) requires accurate handling. Unfortunately parking sensors are not fitted as standard and the car could really do with these, since bits of it completely disappear from view in restricted spaces. I'm told this is one advantage of a wheel mounted on the back door, (unlike the Hyundai design), since you simply back up until the rubber wheel just bounces off!
