Auto Express Car Reviews Latest Sonata is strong performer, although ride quality could be better By Charley ChaeApril 2006 Rating: It's been a good six months for Hyundai. First, in October, the Korean giant launched the revised Getz, then an all-new Santa Fe arrived. And there have been additions to the Coupé and Tucson line-ups, too. As a result of all this activity, the range is looking stronger than ever. Yet even though a new version went on sale last year, its Sonata remains a weak link. With bland styling, soft suspension and a thirsty 2.4-litre petrol engine, it's not one of our favourites.Now, Hyundai has addressed the latter problem by introducing an excellent new 2.0-litre turbodiesel. The 141bhp unit has common-rail fuel injection as well as a particulate filter, and is available mated to a six-speed manual gearbox or a four-speed automatic. To see what buyers can expect, Auto Express drove the flagship CDX in self-shifting guise. Covering 0-62mph in 11.3 seconds on the way to a top speed of 124mph, it is a respectable performer. And with 316Nm of peak torque between 1,800 and 2,500rpm, mid-range acceleration is strong - certainly much better than that of the petrol version. What's more, the diesel is refined and free of vibration. And even though the auto isn't the most responsive, it changes gears smoothly. Combined economy is good at 37.9mpg, and the manual car is expected to achieve at least 48mpg. Yet while the engine is a definite improvement, Hyundai hasn't made the same leap in other areas. Although the ride is soft, the car thumps heavily over potholes. And the inert steering is still some way behind that of European rivals. Inside, however, the CDX is well specified, with standard leather seats, and air-con, plus cruise and stability control. But the plastic steering wheel is slippery to the touch, and material quality elsewhere is only average. At least there's lots of headroom and legroom, while the 462-litre boot is big. So although the Sonata is far from perfect, the introduction of this new diesel engine is another example of Hyundai's rapid development. The Hyundai saloon is frugal, roomy and well equipped - it's just a shame the ride, material quality and styling aren't up to the same standard as the best European models. There's a good range of standard equipment and some nice bonuses.For instance, all CDX models feature a frost windscreen de-icer and heated front seats - particularly welcome as I test drove the car in cold and damp January.The Tucson was created at Hyundai's own design facility in Namyang, Korea. The European and US markets area target area for the company, so the Tucson features crisp clean lines influenced by European tastes.It plans to sell 200,000 Tucsons by next year (2006), with 85,000 destined for Europe.The Tucson will take on the likes of the Toyota RAV-4, Honda CRV, Subaru Forester and Mitsubishi Outlander.There are seven models to choose from with prices starting at £14,995 for the 2.0 16v GSI rising to £18,695 for the flagship 2.7 V6 CDX.As well as sales conquests from other four wheel drive vehicles, Hyundai expects to attract customers who have not previously considered a 4X4.One bonus attraction is that the Tucson is a five door only vehicle, competing against three door opposition.It has a monocoque construction and sits on a highly modified version of the current Coupe platform.There are three engine options - a two-litre petrol, two-litre common-rail turbo-diesel and the powerful 2.7 V6 - and two trim levels; GSI and CDX.With economy always a major consideration for me, I was pleased to drive the 2.0 turbo diesel.Hyundai has particularly high hopes for this model, given that the Tucson is in a segment where more and more drivers are converting to petrol.My vehicle had a definite diesel roar to start with, but in a satisfying rather than disconcerting way. It was certainly an impressive performer.You can cover the 0-62mph spring in under 14 seconds while overall economy figures are attractive, with the vehicle covering almost 40mpg on the combined cycle.The Tucson employs a "torque-on-demand" four-wheel drive system, developed by industry experts Borg Warner.The car runs in front wheel drive until it detects loss of traction, then the 4WD cuts in. it will revert to two wheel driver when adequate traction is detected.Additionally, at speeds of up to 21mph, the driver can select permanent four-wheel drive for extra control when required at the touch of a button.Of course, for it to be a real success the Tucson has to attract families, and to do that it has to be both comfortable and versatile. And it has plenty in its armoury to help achieve this goal.All the occupants can adjust their head restraints for comfort, while the driver's seat is also height adjustable. Its rear seats have a double folding operation, offering up a totally flat load area.The driver gets all the instrumentation conveniently grouped around him and excellent all-round vision.In addition the Tucson comes with Hyundai's five year unlimited mileage fully transferable warranty.
