The original Atos was introduced in 1997. In 1999, it was joined by the less controversially styled Atos Prime. It uses the G4HC Epsilon straight-4 engine. The mkII version comes with a 1086 cc G4HG engine. While most markets have phased out this model in favour of the new Hyundai i10, it is still being manufactured in India, where it is marketed below the i10. The Hyundai Santro is a rebadged version of the city car Hyundai Atos sold in some Asian markets. India Hyundai entered the Indian market through the Santro whose main rival at that time was the popular Maruti Suzuki Zen. The company signed a contract with Bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan to endorse the Santro and although the radical styling was not accepted by everyone, the car was an instant hit. It is still undergoing number of improvements and face lifts to suit the Indian customers. The main rival of Santro in the current market is Suzuki Wagon R and Maruti Zen Estilo. In 2003, older models were replaced by the second generation Atos Prime as the Santro Xing, which is also very popular in India. Pakistan The Santro was launched in Pakistan in 2000. As of December 2009, Pakistan is the only country where the first generation Atos is still being sold and the model has received no upgrades [1]. Malaysia Inokom Atos Prima In Malaysia, Hyundai Atos is locally assembled by Inokom carrying the badge Inokom Atos. The Inokom Atos Prima was later introduced in 2006 which has the new Atos Prime front while maintaining the original Atos rear. It is fitted with a 999cc engine and has a top speed of 90 mph (145 km/h). It was succeeded by a facelift version by 2000. The Atos EV weights 2,585 lb (1,173 kg), including the battery pack, which holds 24 nickel metal hydride (Ni-MH) batteries. An on-board 6.6 kW conductive charger can fully recharge the Ni-MH batteries in seven hours. Its looks are marmite (love them or hate them) but do looks really matter? The car has unbeleivable room inside that you wouldnt beleive from the outside. We took 4 adultsand a full boot to manchester and back in this on one tank of petrol and had no problem with comfort. Hyundai were very helpful with their aftersales service, we were offered many free upgrades after selling us the car, we ......years after the sale and another 4 years after the sale. My dad drove thi occasionally and had no problems but he did was involed in an accident in which the car was very badly damaged but all passengers were perfectly safe. About the Hyundai Atos This subcompact hatch, the smallest in Hyundai's arsenal, has yet to hit U.S. shores, but is a popular choice for city drivers in countries with narrow and congested streets. Marketed under different names around the world (Amica in the UK, Dodge Atos in Mexico, Atoz in South Asia, and Santro in India), the Hyundai Atos arrived on the scene in 1997. At 349.5 cm long and 149.5 cm wide (140 inches by a mere 60 inches), the Atos is nimble enough to zip into small or awkward parking spaces. Initial reaction to the subcompact was mixed, especially to the design of a square box sitting on tiny toy-like 13-inch wheels. Originally outfitted with a 1.0-liter, 58-hp I4 engine, current models sport a 1.1-liter, 62-hp/43-kW I4. A 5-speed manual is standard, but a semi-automatic and regular automatic are available. The front-wheel drive Hyundai Atos averages 44 mpg. Its high boxy profile was built for narrow streets and maximum cargo capacity. Though the Atos seats four, the back seat is cramped and not really designed for families. This is a single person's commuter car.Over the years, the Atos has received minor upgrades. An electric version, the Atos EV also came out in 1997, able to travel 120 miles on one seven-hour charge. The Atos Prime is the best-selling model. In the UK, the Amica disappeared briefly, but returned with a sleeker design, a less boxy roofline, and alloy wheels.
